Who is Shaping AI .. and who is AI Shaping?
I came across a recent observation by a blog written by Andrew Ng yesterday.
He pointed out how different groups are actively shaping public narratives around AI .. testing fears , influencing sentiment and steering how society perceives its risks and benefits.
It made me think !!
We often assume AI is evolving purely based on technology. But clearly it is also being shaped by external forces .. media , policy , incentives and competing interests etc.
That’s one side of the story. But there’s another layer we are quietly missing. While narratives shape how we think about AI , systems which are AI powered are beginning to shape how we think through them.
E.g. – open any AI tool today.
Before you even ask a question, it suggests what you could do.
“Create an image.”
“Help me write.”
“Summarise this.”
These are not neutral prompts. They define the possibility space. They influence what you try , what you exploreand over time — how you think.
So we now have two forces at play.
Outside-in : narratives shaping AI.
Inside-out : interfaces shaping human behaviour.
AI is not just being debated. It is being designed. Design at scale becomes influence. The conversation today often revolves around whether AI is safe , dangerous or transformative. But perhaps the deeper question is:
Who is shaping AI — and how is AI shaping us in return?
The answers won’t just define technology. They will define behaviour. And believe me , over time behaviour defines society.
Until next time , happy working with AI.
