The Next Divide: those who can think with AI .. and those who only think through AI.

In 1995 , Bill Gates wrote in “The Road Ahead” that the world would eventually be divided into two kinds of people :
.. those who know computers .. and those who don’t.

He wasn’t talking about machines. He was talking about opportunity.

.. a decade later, the divide shifted. It wasn’t about computers anymore. It became about the Internet.

.. those who were connected had access to knowledge, people and opportunities at a scale never seen before .. and those who don’t

.. then came smartphones. The internet moved from our desks to our pockets. The connected stayed connected — every minute of the day.

Now, I believe we’re standing at the beginning of another divide. But this one is very different and it happened very fast. It is no longer about technology — It is about thinking.

Every day I see people asking AI to:
– write emails
– summarise documents
– analyse reports
– prepare presentations
– answer questions etc.

Nothing wrong with that. In fact, I do it myself. But the question is different.

𝙒𝙝𝙤 𝙞𝙨 𝙙𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜?

I increasingly see four stages emerging:

Independent Thinking — “I’ll think about it first.”
↓
AI-Assisted Thinking — “Let AI challenge and improve my thinking.”
↓
AI-Directed Thinking — “I’ll go with what AI suggests.”
↓
AI-Dependent Thinking — “I can’t begin unless AI tells me how.”

Did you notice something?

This isn’t about using AI. It’s about our relationship with AI. The best thinkers won’t avoid AI nor will they surrender their judgement to it. They just know “when” and “how” to use it .. and equally importantly, “when and how not to”

– the first digital divide was about “access”.
– the second was about “connectivity”.
– the third may well be about “cognitive independence”.

Because in a world where everyone has access to the same models , the real differentiator will not be who uses AI. It will be who can still ask better questions , challenge better answers and arrive at better judgement.

Perhaps the future belongs neither to those who reject AI nor to those who blindly depend on it. It belongs to those who know how to think with AI and without letting AI think for them.

AI is changing the tools we use. Let’s make sure it doesn’t quietly redefine the way we think.
