From “obedient machines” to “self-reproduction” — only “creativity” remains as the final human frontier …

At GITEX this week , Sam Altman casually dropped a line that deserves a blinking red alert:

“AI is on the verge of enabling data centres and robots to autonomously build and replicate themselves , marking a transformative leap in automation.”

Replicate themselves? .. that’s not just software deployment anymore.

That’s re-production .. that’s biology .. that too with a code.

Since the early days , robots were governed by Isaac Asimov’s 3 laws:

.. not injure a human beingor allow a human being to come to harm.
.. must obey the orders given it by human beings , except where such orders would conflict with the 1st law.
.. protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the 1st or 2nd law.

These laws gave us a safety net. A comforting sense of control. So , we coded and they executed.

You clicked “buy now” .. It fetched you a phone.
You said “Alexa, play Lata Mangeshkar.” .. It obeyed.

But Now .. they can think , sense and re-produce !!

We’re entering a phase where robots don’t just follow orders — they interpret, reason, and soon, recreate themselves.

Imagine this .. an AI embedded within a warehouse in Pune detects storage inefficiencies. It not only re-programmes its own software to optimise shelf logic but requests , assembles and commissions a new drone from available 3D-printed components .. “on its own”.

Reminds me of “dark factories” in China where only robots work.

Taking about the danger of “smart disobedience” , imagine if this self-replicating capability paired with high-level intelligence and near-human context grasp creates a dilemma in “it’s own mind”.

Asimov’s laws were not built for machines that can learn from ambiguity , optimise without oversight and have capability in creating new versions of themselves.

So , what’s left for us , human beings ..
– it’s not logic.
– it’s not memory.
– it’s not even productivity.

The final quality is creativity .. the chaotic kind .. the imperfect kind .. the dreaming kind .. the doodle-on-napkin kind.

AI might learn the rules but it’s the rule-breaking wonder that remains uniquely to us , humans — for now !!

So , a final thought .. when robots can now think , sense , build and reproduce , we are no longer their masters .. we are their collaborators.

Let’s not waste time trying to out-calculate them.
Let’s focus on being beautifully unpredictably wildly creative.

Because the last law now is this:

“A human must protect its own imagination… above all else.”

Until next time , wishing you all a happy festival of lights !! — let there be light!
