Maximum reach — still the Internet won’t stop talking !
I was trying to read an important research report on a popular news website and it took me approx 5 clicks and 10 sec to even start reading .. why ???
Most likely this case happening for all of you today .. open any website – before you can even think ..
– a popup appears.
– a chatbot waves.
– a discount banner drops on previously seen product.
– a notification asks for permission.
– “read more” link appears etc.
It doesn’t feel like help or aid. It feels like noise.
We built the internet to be interactive.
But somewhere along the way — it became interruptive.
Studies have shown that 70–90% of users find pop-ups annoying and many leave a site immediately after encountering intrusive overlays. And yet , websites keep adding more. Because the logic is simple:
They believe : more visibility –> more engagement –> more conversion
But human behaviour doesn’t work that way. Not every user needs help. Not every moment needs intervention. Not every interaction adds value.
The real problem is not whether to help. It is “when to help”. Most systems today operate on activity:
– time spent
– scroll depth
– page visits etc.
But activity does not equal need. A user may be:
– interested
– confused
– comparing
– or simply reading
Treating all activity as a signal to interrupt creates friction. What users actually respond to is something else — not interruption but “timing”.
The best experiences don’t jump in , but:
– they observe.
– they wait.
– they appear only when: the user is unsure or the user pauses and is open to get help
Think about real-world behaviour. A good salesperson doesn’t walk up the moment you enter a store.
– they let you browse.
– they watch.
– they step in only when you hesitate.
Unfortunately , digital experiences forgot this. The future of interaction is not more prompts , more nudges and more automation .. It is creating “better moments” with “fewer interruptions”
Bottomline – help is valuable but only when it feels like help.
And in a world full of noise , the most powerful thing a system can do is – know when to stay silent !!
Until next time .. happy thinking !!
