The death of ranking : in the age of Insta reels and GenAI replies , who is deciding what product to show which we buy?
If you thought product rankings on an e‑commerce list still mattered , think again! Today we shop not by scrolling through 1 to 100 product. We’re swiping , tapping , chatting and asking questions to GPT what to buy. And we’re buying faster than ever .. often before without we reaching that “best ranked” item.
Let’s consider the numbers : social commerce in India now accounts for 15% of the online retail market up from ~5% five years ago.
Also . shoppers who engage with AI chat tools convert at 12.3% vs 3.1% for others .. an almost 4× uplift .. wow!
In other words Insta reels , chat prompts and AI recommendations aren’t just engaging tools. They’re eroding the traditional “product list ranking” model.
So , let’s call it a transition from “listing to lens”
Visibility once meant being the top result in a thumbnail-filled product list rich with photos, attractive price and a spot on page one right on top.
Now it looks like:
– a 10‑second Instagram reel saying “Buy this”
– a chatbot reply saying “here’s your match”
– a sponsored listing with intent data bypassing pages altogether
Ranking today isn’t about “best” or “top rated”. It’s about “who’s shown first, to whom, when .. and why”.
Why ranking needs a redefinition?
– Intent first : when a user asks “what’s the best casual sneaker for my 10‑km daily walk?” , ranking must adapt to that intent. Not just ratings + price.
– Visibility ≠ (is not equal to) relevance : a viral item may ride high but that doesn’t guarantee fit. Listing algorithms are built for clicks .. not context.
– Paid placement over merit : sponsored slots and “Featured for you” blur the ranking signal of quality with marketing muscle.
– GenAI‑curated experiences : the recommendation engine is replacing the user’s browse behaviour. Atlas browser is taking it to the next level. Rank is obsolete when the platform picks your product matching your story for you.
What Brands and Platforms Must Do
– Stop getting obsessed over “I want to be #1” and start asking : how do I show up when the user asks a context‑rich question?
– Use AI to match intent , not just metadata.
– Build micro‑moments : a reel or a chat should serve up the right product , not just a ranked list.
– Re-frame ranking as reinforcement : once the match is shown & chosen , let reviews , UGC and verification kick in for building trust.
At mPrompto , our endeavour is to re-write the rules of digital shelf visibility , not just by listing better but by resonating deeper. We help brands ride the wave of intent-led discovery , ensuring every product gets its moment to be seen, understood, and chosen.
