Maslow’s hierarchy of needs — rewritten for AI

We often think people use AI in the same way .. well! they don’t.

Just like human needs evolve, so does the way we engage with AI. It reminded me of Maslow’s hierarchy.

At the base, usage is purely functional ..

  • “help me write an email.”
  • “summarise this document.”
  • “fix my grammar.”

AI here is a tool. It saves time. Move a level up, and the need changes.

  • “explain this concept.”
  • “compare these options.”
  • “what should I do next?”

Now AI becomes a guide. It reduces cognitive effort and uncertainty. Then comes expression.

  • “help me write a LinkedIn post.”
  • “make this sound better.”
  • “draft a presentation.”

See .. AI now becomes an amplifier. It helps us communicate, not just complete tasks .. further up, it becomes about performance.

  • “give me ideas.”
  • “help me think through this problem.”
  • “improve my approach.”

Observe closely .. here AI is no longer a tool. It truly becomes a co-pilot. And right at the top, something interesting happens. People don’t just use AI to do things. They use it to think, create, and express identity.

  • “writing blogs.”
  • “building frameworks.”
  • “exploring ideas.”

AI becomes a thinking partner. What’s fascinating is this:

Most conversations around AI are still stuck at the bottom of the pyramid.

Efficiency .. Automation .. Cost.

But the real shift is happening at the top.

from doing …. to thinking.
from execution …. to expression.
from assistance …. to augmentation of judgement.

AI is not just changing how we work. It is quietly changing what we expect from intelligence itself.

The question is no longer : “What can AI do for me?”

But: “At what level am I using AI?”

Because that determines the value you extract from it .. and perhaps , the version of yourself you’re becoming.

Untile next time , happy thinking with AI !!
