Data is useless without direction : what decision-focused AI must do differently
Well , let’s face it .. we’re drowning in dashboards.
Open any business app today and there it is .. colourful charts , sales graphs , heatmaps , bounce rates , engagement funnels etc. But after all that data mined and churned … what happened?
Nothing .. because we’re still staring at numbers and wondering, “now what next?”
From digital-first brands in Bengaluru to legacy businesses in Delhi, when I interacted with teams , I kept seeing the same pattern where teams are NOT struggling with data scarcity. They’re struggling with decision clarity.
1. Rich in data — Poor in action !
A D2C brand tracks every click. A lending startup maps user cohorts down to pincode. A food app knows exactly when you reorder your biryani. But when it’s time to act , discount , pivot , launch .. the room goes silent. Or worse, someone pulls a “gut-feel / instinctive” call.
So , we don’t need more reports. We need clearer next steps.
2. Predictive is good .. prescriptive is GOLD.
It’s great that your AI can tell what might happen next. But decision focused AI needs to say: “Here’s what you should do .. and why.”
For example:
If a customer is browsing gold loans, why wait? Prompt them with the best-fit offer. If your monsoon campaign isn’t converting , don’t just observe. Reallocate that budget righyt away.
A way to think of it like this : predictive is your rear-view mirror. Prescriptive is your GPS. What say?
3. What decision focused AI should “actually” do ?
Just to give an example .. Diwali festival just ended .. don’t panic about the drop in orders. That’s seasonal, not systemic. So , where can the focus be :
– Prioritise smartly : Fix abandoned carts first. That Instagram new ads experiment can wait.
– Show the trade-offs : Offer 10% off = 12% more sales, but ₹3.5 less profit per unit. Decision is all yours.
– Build trust : Don’t just say what. Say why. Even smart AI must explain its thinking.
4. For founders and teams , it’s a simple shift
– From tracking to taking action
– From metrics to movements
– From data overload to decision momentum
Your AI shouldn’t just be a dashboard .. It should be your co-pilot.
So what’s the takeaway here?
If your AI doesn’t help you decide better, it’s just another noisy chart. A smart business today needs more than just compiled information .. it needs intention. In a world full of “what happened,” we need tools that says “Here’s what you should do next.”
I’ll leave you with this one thought to take back home :
In this data flooded world , what’s that one decision you’re overanalysing .. when you should really just move forward?
