7 Eras of AI – across time !!
We speak about AI as if it’s a single revolution. It isn’t. It’s a series of eras each quietly replacing the previous definition either partially or fully. This reminds me of people who knew parallel processing automatically shifting towards algorithms and machine learning. So , here’s my take on AI eras over time ..
1] Rule-based era
AI began as deterministic logic. If-this-then-that systems. It evoled decision trees and gave rise to automation but “without learning”.
It didn’t think. It just executed the rules.
2] Machine Learning era
Then came statistical pattern recognition , classification models , forecasting and recommendation engines.
AI didn’t understand but it detected patterns at scale.
Essentially , we moved from rules to probabilities.
3] Prediction era
In this era , AI began answering .. “what is likely to happen next?”. Gave rise to “propensity models” and “dynamic pricing”. This helped in building next-best-action systems.
It shifted from reporting the past to anticipating the future.
4] Generative era
Welcome to speaking with machine in “natural” language. Language changed everything. It impacted chat interfaces , content generation , code assistants and many more things.
Suddenly , AI became accessible. It felt intelligent to non-developers. But much of this was surface.
= conversation .. not coordination.
5] Co-pilot era
Now , AI started working alongside humans. It influenced decisions by embedding suggestions , workflow integration , decision assistance systems etc.
AI was not replacing judgement .. but it started augmenting it.
6] Agentic era ( now emerging )
AI began acting across systems .. tool usage , API execution , workflow chaining , autonomous job execution etc.
AI now was not just responding .. it was orchestrating things – at times batter than what a human could do!
7] Infrastructure era ( just around the corner )
IMHO this is where AI disappears .. it becomes invisible.
Ambient. Embedded. Not a feature. Not an interface .. just a layer.
Like electricity .. like cloud .. assumed by everyone that it will be there , always!
So , see how each era killed the previous narrative :
– AI as automation is too narrow.
– AI as chatbot is too shallow.
– AI as feature is too temporary.
What survives is not the interface. It is the intelligence layer beneath it.
If your strategy is built around a specific version of AI , it will expire soon.
If your strategy is built around adaptability and decision systems , it will evolve.
So , observe that AI doesn’t move in upgrades It moves across eras.
The question is: Are you building for the phase or just chasing the headline?
Until next time, happy thinking!!
